The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
