New research suggests that people who stop using new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a trigger activating and you become ravenous," said an individual.
The struggle is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
