Individuals who endured sexual abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism following their first encounter with Pope Leo at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the Pope's choice to meet with them so early in his papacy sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Strict Approach Advocated

The group is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who confesses to or is found guilty of sexually abusing a minor. This approach has already been adopted in the US.

The Pope recognized that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to the representative.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is resistance," Hickey remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in May, has taken on this persistent problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Personal Connection

For the representative, who prefers they/them pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the policy is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his papacy, because we aim to work with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the coalition, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, met with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey noted the leader was "compassionate" about their personal story and seemed "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Victims have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The group is hoping that revisions to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the strict approach worldwide.

They have spoken with experts and compiled materials that they will submit to the pontiff.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Emphasized

A recent church-ordered document highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "urgent need for bishops and senior officials to be held accountable for inaction and concealment."

Moving Forward

The representative shared they told the pontiff at the start of their meeting: "This is as much a challenge for him to participate in a conversation as it was for us."

After the meeting, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, uniting and establishing a relationship and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a move in the right direction," Hickey commented.

Hickey concluded that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can change how the story ends - he valued that."
