Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
